Background

As an international cooperation enterprise for sustainable development with worldwide operations, the federally owned Deutsche Gesellschaftfor international Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH supports the German Government in achieving its development –policy objectives. GIZ promotes complex reforms and change processes.

In Ethiopia, GIZ has been working for more than 40 years in bilateral cooperation on behalf of he German Federal Ministry for Economic cooperation and Development (BMZ) and on commission of the Ethiopian government and international donors. For its strengthening Drought Resilience (SDR) programme office in Addis Ababa GIZ is looking for:

Responsibilities

  • Working under the supervision of the soil and water management engineering team leader, he/she will be responsible for development of integrated soil and water management approaches in collaboration with government services and local communities;
  • He/She will provide information for the compilation of topographic maps and data by making field measurements;
  • He/she will involve on surveying, studying and designing context –specific soil and water conservation measures like water spreading weirs in selected kebeles in close cooperation with an engineer.

Tasks

General Tasks

  • Contribute to annual operational planning, subject specific monitoring and reporting in line with project objectives and intended results; participate regularly in regional team meetings for planning and reviewing;
  • Build a smoothly cooperating team within SDR-ASAL projects, BoPAD and other relevant stakeholders from administration and development partners at all levels;
  • Carry out responsibilities in line with the GIZ management principles;
  • Carry out any other task trusted with by the programme manager in coherence with the programe objectives

Specific tasks related to surveying, study and design of soil and water conservation structures and water spreading weirs

  • Establish fixed points for use in making designs and maps, using geodetic and engineering instruments;
  • Adjust surveying instruments in order to maintain their accuracy;
  • Measure the size and shape of an area of land using specialized surveying tools and techniques;
  • Work with engineers and developers to plan, supervise and monitor construction projects;
  • Record the results of surveys and verify the accuracy of survey data, including measurements and calculations conducted at survey sites;
  • Contribute to the design of water spreading weirs using the survey result data;
  • Compile and evaluate data gathered from field studies;
  • Produce profile maps and reports;
  • Support the setting up of training material and exchange visits;
  • Train woreda experts, and direct their work in such activities as performing surveys or drafting maps

  • Excellent communication skills, both written and oral in English and Amharic;
  • The ability to read and speak Afar is an advantage

Qualifications and Experience

  • Masters or Bachelor degree in surveying, topography, geography, landscape architecture, urban and regional planning, geology and other related fields
  • A minimum of 3-5 years practical field experience on surveying of soil and water management and water harvesting structure construction in arid and semi-arid low lands, in particular ability of surveying, studying and designing context specific soil and water conservation measures in lowland areas like water spreading weirs;
  • Experience of working with pastoral and agro-pastoral communities, preferably in Afar region
